. - Media release, 3 March 2010. *******NB Women’s News ******* A ROYAL INVESTIGATION INTO CHANGING TIMES(Last month) in 1967, Prime Minister Lester Pearson created the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, having been pressured to do so by a coalition of women’s groups across Canada and having resisted doing it partly because the press was “very negative to the idea”. Among the seven commissioners were Chairman “Mrs. John Bird” of Ottawa and St. Andrews, N.B. and “Mrs. Robert Ogilvie” of Fredericton. They would later sign the final report as “Florence Bird” and “Doris Ogilvie”. John Humphrey of Hampton, who had famously contributed to the writing of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was also appointed… The final report - published 40 yrs ago this year - sold out in 3 days. It seemed that every woman had her copy. The report, and the 3-year process, “woke up Canadian women to the inequities in the system”. Actually, it woke up the country. There was no going back… - From a column by Chairperson Elsie Hambrook. Feb 2010. *******NB Women’s News ******* WE NEED MORE SILOS!It was interesting to read Sue Rickards' commentary on the Act to create a Crown corporation to administer the provincial poverty reduction plan… (She) suggests the way to deal with poverty is to put it in the hands of the communities... I would point out that before Louis J. Robichaud's Equal Opportunity Program, poverty was in the hands of communities; this was not working. As a society, we made the decision to put some public programs in place to deal with broad issues (health, education, poverty, unemployment, etc.)… The delivery of the Poverty Reduction Plan will be done by Community Inclusion Networks (as many as 15)… It will be up to each network to determine local priorities. So, instead of having a program that is available, as well as similar, for everyone, we could now have 15 programs. Is that not returning to the pre-Robichaud era, where 15 counties were administering social assistance with the consequences we all know, one of which was the difference in the help offered, depending if you were living in a rich or poor county? Remember, at the beginning of this process, one of the arguments was that poverty reduction had not been achieved because gov’t departments were working in silos. Our social thinkers have found the solution. We need more silos! … We are creating an administrative monster that will devour funds but will not help reduce poverty significantly... - Excerpts, Commentary, Jean-Claude Basque, Telegraph Journal, 4 March 2010. *******NB Women’s News ******* ADRIENNE CLARKSON WRITES TO OLYMPIC COMMITTEE - HOCKEYAs a Canadian women's hockey fan and founder of the Clarkson Cup for women's hockey, I read with … disbelief the report of your remarks after Canada won its 3rd Olympic championship in women's hockey. “We cannot continue without improvement,” you said. Your musings made us think that women's hockey might no longer be part of the Winter Olympics… Would this mean that women in all the countries that now play our distinctive game will no longer be able to train from childhood with the Olympic dream as their goal? Why is it that women must be excluded until they're not only as good but better than anyone else, especially in the eyes of men? … Was there not an “imbalance” when men's hockey began its international ascent? …Rather than think there aren't enough good players in the world to warrant a place in the Olympics, should we not be thinking about encouraging & sustaining players in countries that want to participate? …Having other countries' teams come to Canada to train means they would be able to play more games and train in a different way… We invented hockey; we can share the dream. And we're not worried about continuing to win. - Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor-general, Globe & Mail, 1 Mar. 2010. *******NB Women’s News ******* AS THEY SAY Women have served all these centuries as looking-glasses possessing the magic and delicious power of reflecting the figure of a man at twice its natural size. - Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own. ******* NouvELLES ******* CERTAINS SEMBLENT PENSER QU’IL EST IRONIQUE OU INAPPROPRIÉ …

Me semble qu’un bon pére doit respecter ça. Ça m’aide pas plusse à dormir. ******* NouvELLES ******* TEL QUEL
